The Forggen Lake
Even though Forggen Lake, as it is today, is not a natural lake, it lies in a basin that was filled by a much larger lake after the last ice age. With an area of 15.2 square kilometres, the lake is the fifth largest lake in Bavaria.

The Vilsalpsee

The Alatsee
Lake Alatsee is a meromictic lake. It is fed by groundwater that flows eastwards via Faulenbach through Obersee and Mittersee into the Lech.
At a depth of 15 to 18 metres, Lake Alatsee has a bright red layer of purple sulphur bacteria.
Above the lake is rich in oxygen, below it almost without oxygen.
Despite the lack of oxygen and the toxic metabolic products of the purple-sulfur bacteria, it was repeatedly observed that fish went directly into the layer or apparently came out of it intact.

The Hopfensee
